BRIDGE TYPE SELECTION

  • Engage Stakeholders
  • Consider Project Theme
  • Solicit Preference Input
  • Incorporate Preferences
  • Satisfy all Commitments
  • Present Feasible Bridge Options
  • Maintain Budget Compliance
  • Reach Informed Consent

The success of contemporary large bridge projects often hinges on an artful execution of the first phase of the project. This involves selecting a bridge type that fulfills the desires of a perceptive and involved public while also satisfying the owner. It merges the desires of the public with engineering realities and real-world constraints of budget and constructibility.

To arrive at the best technical solution, grounded in the economic realities of the day and supported by the community, the Baker-Palmer Team will utilize an approach that utilizes the concept of informed consent. This process has been used successfully in several recent bridge projects and will be tailored specifically for the Lake Bridges project to suit the specific needs of the project, community and region.

Effective, credible public involvement promises one thing and one thing only: to provide continuous and ongoing engagement that solicits input from the public and that informs them of technical and economic limitations so as to engender an atmosphere of informed consent throughout the life of the project.

The Lake Bridges Bridge Type Selection Process will consist of a series of three rounds that guide and support the technical work. The three rounds will involve the following activities:

 Round 1: Design Guidelines
 - Round 2: Bridge Concept
 - Round 3: Bridge Alternatives
 - Final Type
