BRIDGE PARAMETERS INTRODUCTION
The new bridges over Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley must satisfy certain requirements, call ‘parameters’. These were developed during and are specified in the environmental document and resulting Record of Decision authorizing the project. These parameters include:
Alignment
As shown in the first two aerial photos below, the new structures will be generally parallel to and immediately downstream (north) from the existing bridges
Typical Section
As shown in the next images below, the new structures will be significantly wider than the existing (shown for comparison) with four – 12 foot wide lanes, both inside and outside shoulders and a pedestrian/bikeway on the upstream (south) side of the bridges.
Navigational Clearance
As shown in the last two images below, safe and adequate minimum navigational clearances must be provided to accommodate commercial barge traffic on the lakes. These clearances are set and approved by the United States Coast Guard.
